New page

Google Voice is a voice-over IP internet phone service provided by Google. Within the US, it is a completely free service to use, albeit requiring an existing and legitimate phone number provided by an external carrier to start.

This service can be used concurrently alongside Google's [[Google Fi Wireless]] on the same Google Account, lending itself to be useful for maintaining separate, unified identities. For example, I have a primary phone number that I use for most services and people; a Voice number used for untrusted or unknown people, and my Fi number that is used strictly for government and business purposes.

One of the main draws of Google Voice for me is its availability on any device that can access the Internet. It truly allows a uniform identity that a carrier-provided phone number cannot inherently provide. It enabled me utilise platforms such as the [[Nintendo Switch]] as true multimedia devices, when installing projects such as [[Switchroot Android]].

Google Voice's other major boon is its ability to allow the user to fully select and customise their phone number, and either use it as-is, then port it out to a real carrier. I use numbers with Silicon Valley area codes for job applications, whereas I have other numbers that form patterns on a ten-key pad. I have one number which is comprised of seven sevens, whereas other numbers are only comprised of three unique digits in its entirety. It has made the mundane task of sharing phone numbers its own joy.

I don't fully understand the process Google has incorporated here, but it seems that I have been grandfathered into a program that permitted me to have two Voice numbers associated to one account.
