君に夢中 (Kimi ni Muchuu; "I'm crazy over you") rests as the second track of Hikaru Utada's BAD MODE album. To be honest, it was pushed heavily when it first released. So much so, that I tended to actively avoid it because it felt forced down my throat.

However, when I ended up I reciting its lyrics out of the blue, not knowing exactly which song it came from, I figured that it was time to give it another chance. And once I pieced together that it was this track, it was soon propelled to one of my favorite tracks released in the past decade, just like many other parts of BAD MODE. 君に夢中 is not necessarily less of an introspective evaluation, as while it does involve a showcase of uncontrollable love of another person, it still focuses how how it affects the singer's sense of self directly.

The album's tropes of self-doubt and forbidden love are present (the latter, finally mentioned verbatim within its lyrics). But, early in the track, Kimi ni Muchuu proceeds to introduce themes of shame for chasing after what seems like an unshakable addiction of comfort. The same self-doubt present throughout the album, which was released during a global period of isolation due to COVID-19, a pandemic that encouraged people to support themselves on their own via oft mandated requirements of social distancing. Does the singer want the comfort of this person who causes them to lose themself, to forget who they are themselves, due to their devotion to their ideal lover's satisfaction? Do they admire their own automony? What starts off as this confused shame soon blossoms into a bold admission of devotion. And this very admission sets the song's overall theme as a proud example of being true to oneself and processing one's own desires for their validity. If there were no other words to describe the song, it could fall along the lines of "self-assurance".

But should it really be able to compete with PINK BLOOD for that title?
